Ninety years ago, an American artist working in Paris connected corks, bottle caps and cloth scraps with wire and whimsy to make a lively circus that remains a triumph of art and invention. Alexander Calder spent much of his career in a Roxbury, Connecticut studio. His work still inspires MAKERS.

Learn to cut, bend, coil, flatten, and connect the soft iron wire that Calder mastered. Then let corks, feathers, beads and stuff inspire your inventiveness. Take home your own circus or side show, plus wire and wire cutters to continue your work. With a vintage box to organize your materials.

The MAKE movement is a celebration of inventiveness, technical finesse and creativity. It connects active hands around the world. Some of our school holiday workshops will look at artists, artisans, workshops and studios that have inspired both the MAKE movement and our programs.
